Nigeria and Japan have deepened their bilateral energy partnership following a strategic visit by Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and key stakeholders to Japan.
According to Malam Mutari Ibrahim, Director of Promotion and Outreach at the Rural Electrification Agency, the visit aimed to enhance Nigeria’s power infrastructure, improve grid reliability, and explore advanced energy solutions. The three-day engagement, facilitated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), featured discussions with Japanese energy leaders, policymakers, and industry experts.
The Nigerian delegation examined Japan’s power sector policies, electricity distribution models, and grid management strategies. Insights from Japan’s advanced load dispatching mechanisms and energy trading frameworks provided valuable lessons for Nigeria’s evolving power market.
Technical sessions also covered electricity pricing, market competitiveness, and renewable energy integration. The delegation conducted on-site assessments of Japanese energy facilities, including Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and DAIKIN Solution Plaza, to explore energy-efficient innovations.
During high-level meetings with the Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, both nations explored investment opportunities in Nigeria’s energy sector. JICA’s potential co-financing of the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) Project was also discussed, aiming to expand energy access in underserved communities.
Future collaboration will focus on technology transfer, capacity building, and long-term investments to support Nigeria’s energy transition. The visit reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to adopting global best practices for a more sustainable and resilient power sector.
