- GEF-9 replenishment
- Global Environment Facility funding
- Climate finance for developing countries
With the clock ticking on key international environmental targets, experts have begun discussions on the Global Environment Facility’s (GEF) ninth replenishment. The Technical Advisory Group meetings, held this week, mark the start of the funding process that will guide GEF allocations for developing countries from July 2026 to June 2030.
Environmental scientists and technical experts shared insights on biodiversity, pollution, land use, and sustainability in food systems, oceans, forests, and wildlife conservation. The discussions aimed to shape funding priorities for impactful environmental policies.
Carlos Manuel Rodríguez, GEF CEO and Chairperson, emphasized the importance of nature-positive governance, calling it essential for aligning policies with sustainable development goals. He noted that misaligned public policies contribute to environmental crises and stressed that cohesive governance is key to lasting change.
The meetings featured representatives from major environmental conventions, including the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. Senior officials from the UN Division of Ocean Affairs also contributed insights on cross-border environmental challenges.
Claude Gascon, GEF Director, highlighted the significance of these discussions, stating that the insights gathered will play a crucial role in shaping the next phase of GEF funding.
