The Kano State Government is calling for immediate action to address significant gaps in waste management across the state. Dr. Dahir Hashim, Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, emphasized the urgency during the monthly sanitation exercise on Saturday, February 1, 2025, in Kano. “There is a huge gap in waste management, hence the need for immediate corrective measures,” Dr. Hashim stated. He urged residents to actively participate in maintaining a cleaner environment, noting that waste management is a collective responsibility.

To enhance compliance during sanitation hours, the commissioner announced plans to establish roadblocks at strategic locations to prevent vehicles from entering Kano during designated sanitation times. “Movement of vehicles during sanitation hours will no longer be tolerated, particularly those coming from outside Kano. In the next exercise, we will deploy sufficient security to man the exercise; in addition, we are going to block some roads leading into the state,” he said. Dr. Hashim also condemned motor parks that continue operations during sanitation exercises, warning of firm action against violators.

He advised residents and travelers to comply with sanitation restrictions and adjust their travel plans accordingly to avoid disruptions. “I want to express my displeasure over the continued movement of people and vehicles, especially within the stipulated period of sanitation,” he lamented. The commissioner emphasized that anyone, including transport operators, caught violating the rules would face severe penalties.

These measures aim to improve waste management practices and promote a cleaner environment in Kano State.
