The Coca-Cola System in Nigeria, including Coca-Cola Nigeria Ltd. and its bottler, Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), has launched a packaging collection hub in Lagos to tackle waste collection issues. Unveiled on January 31, 2025, the hub will collect and recycle packaging materials across Nigeria. With the ability to process 13,000 metric tonnes of plastic annually, it aims for significant impact.Zoran Bogdanovic, CEO of Coca-Cola, stated that this investment will support local communities, create jobs, and show the company’s commitment to sustainability. He also mentioned Coca-Cola’s global goal to reduce packaging waste by using 35%-40% recycled materials and increasing recycled plastic use to 35%

.Luisa Ortega, President of Coca-Cola’s Africa Operating Unit, noted that Coca-Cola has been part of Nigerian communities for almost 75 years. Through collaborations, the company plans to expand design innovations, explore new collection models, and improve existing ones.The hub will focus on plastic waste management by collecting PET, processing it into clean PET bales, and producing recycled polyethylene (rPET) through third-party partnerships. This initiative aims to contribute to cleaner communities and reduce packaging waste, with plans to scale up upon success.

Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Trade and Investment, called the launch a crucial step in Nigeria’s sustainability and economic growth efforts. She praised Coca-Cola’s investment, noting alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for a self-sustaining nation.Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also praised the facility, calling it a step forward in waste management. He emphasized the importance of such initiatives for a cleaner, healthier Lagos.This project highlights Coca-Cola’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and economic development through responsible waste management.
