Patients at Alimosho General Hospital in Igando, Lagos State, are urging the Lagos State Government to relocate the dumpsite directly opposite the hospital. They say the stench is overwhelming, and the refuse heaps create an eyesore.

Mrs. Amina Ayetoro, who brought her elderly mother for treatment, criticized the dumpsite’s location. She said the government has ignored repeated appeals to move it. “The site is too close to the hospital, creating serious health risks for patients seeking care,” she warned.

Mr. Felix Ogu, whose child is admitted, described how the stench worsens during the rainy season, especially near the Maternal and Child Centre (MCC). He questioned whether the government understands the dangers of placing a refuse site beside a major hospital.

Dr. Essien Peters, a patient, called the situation unacceptable. He said the dumpsite causes severe discomfort for patients, healthcare workers, and nearby residents. He urged the government to act quickly, with relocation as the best solution.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warns that open dumping, though cheap, severely harms public health and the environment. Toxic emissions from dumpsites pollute the air, water, and soil. People working there and those living nearby inhale and ingest hazardous substances, increasing disease risks due to poor sanitation and pests.

Relocating the dumpsite remains the best way to protect patients, healthcare workers, and residents from these dangers.
