At the recent International Conference on “Solar Energy Revolution in Nigeria and the African Continent” held at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Christian Anieke called upon Nigerian scientists to tackle the high costs and storage challenges associated with solar energy. He emphasized the need for alternative energy sources and the importance of making solar power accessible to all Nigerian households.

Prof. Niyazi Sarciftci from Johannes Kepler University highlighted Africa’s abundant solar resources and urged effective utilization, noting that solar energy is more peaceful compared to nuclear options. He acknowledged battery storage as a primary challenge but asserted that solar power will define Africa’s future and is not as expensive as commonly perceived. The conference also addressed issues such as the prevalence of counterfeit solar products in the market and the health risks associated with fossil fuels.

Experts advocated for the establishment of monitoring mechanisms to detect fake products and emphasized the need for increased adoption of solar energy across the continent. This gathering of scholars from Nigeria and around the world underscored the critical role of scientific innovation in overcoming the barriers to widespread solar energy adoption in Africa.
