Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called for urgent measures to address the significant shrinkage of the Lake Chad Basin.

Speaking at the conclusion of the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum in Maiduguri, Borno State, Ganduje emphasized the critical need for environmental interventions alongside ongoing security and peace-building efforts.Highlighting the vision of the Lake Chad Basin Commission’s founders, Ganduje advocated for renewed focus on inter-basin water transfer projects, particularly the initiative to channel water from Cameroon’s Mbange River to Lake Chad. He acknowledged the funding challenges these projects face but stressed their importance for the region’s ecological future.

Ganduje also proposed exploring additional water sources, such as Nigeria’s River Benue, River Bongola, and River Katuna, to develop a comprehensive solution for replenishing Lake Chad. He expressed gratitude to development partners, including the UNDP and the governments of Germany, the UK, Sweden, and the Netherlands, for their financial support in implementing the regional stabilization strategy.

The call to action underscores the pressing need to combine environmental restoration with security measures to ensure the sustainable development of the Lake Chad Basin.
