The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating malaria, positioning it as a top public health priority under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Dr. Iziaq Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, outlined strategic efforts during a meeting with the Malaria Consortium on January 26, 2025, in Abuja.

Dr. Salako highlighted the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp), which unites federal and state governments to improve healthcare delivery, ensuring better tracking of operations. Additionally, digital health initiatives are central to building a comprehensive national health data system, vital for malaria interventions.

The Malaria Consortium, led by Dr. Nnenna Ogbulafor, National Malaria Elimination Programme Coordinator, commended the government’s progress. Dr. Kolawole Maxwell, the organisation’s Director of Programmes, discussed ongoing assessments in Kano and Osun states, identifying factors influencing mosquito net usage and developing tailored solutions.

Dr. Salako emphasised the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) as a critical tool in supporting malaria management. “The BHCPF has been reorganised to ensure regular disbursements, reinforcing primary healthcare,” he stated.

Recognising the consortium as a global ally, the Minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening partnerships for sustainable malaria eradication.

This renewed focus on collaboration, innovation, and resource allocation underscores the government’s determination to achieve a malaria-free nation.
