- Enugu launches green job initiative.
- Climate policy boosts energy innovation.
- Renewable energy to drive economic growth.
The Enugu State Government plans to create 792,000 jobs in renewable energy, waste management, and reforestation by 2060. These goals align with the Enugu State Climate Policy and Action Plan (ESCPAP), which positions the state as a pioneer in Nigeria’s climate efforts.
Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the State Government, explained that the policy includes the Off-Grid Electrification Strategy, designed to expand electricity access. It prioritizes renewable energy solutions like solar, wind, and hydro to power underserved areas and boost public services.
Furthermore, the ESCPAP targets 80% renewable energy use and a 60% reduction in transport emissions by 2060. It also incorporates a robust afforestation initiative to increase carbon sequestration. Prof. Onyia emphasized that these strategies will significantly grow the state’s economy, with projections indicating a 25-fold GDP increase.
To ensure the plan’s success, the government established an implementation committee. This group includes representatives from the private sector, civil society, and international partners. Additionally, the state will introduce climate change education in schools to prepare future leaders for green innovation.
The Mbah administration is committed to balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability. By 2031, it aims to expand Enugu’s economy to $30 billion through investments in renewable energy and sustainable agriculture.
Through its bold policies, Enugu is addressing climate challenges while creating opportunities for economic transformation and improving the quality of life for its residents.
