The Bukuma community in Rivers State has accused the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) of defying a 2021 court ruling regarding the establishment of a cluster for the community. Bukuma, located in Degema Local Government Area, hosts an oil field with 10 oil wells.
Bukuma’s Paramount Ruler, King Precious Elekima, stated that the community sought its own cluster after being grouped with 16 other communities that did not have a valid stake in the oil operations. Despite a court ruling in their favor, which ordered a separate cluster for Bukuma, the community alleges that neither Eroton Exploration nor NNPCL has complied with the decision.
The traditional ruler criticized NNPCL for engaging with individuals in the community to create the false impression of reconciliation, while the community remains denied its due benefits. He also highlighted the negative impact of a recent explosion at one of the wellheads, which worsened the community’s living conditions.
Elekima called on the government to hold NNPCL accountable and ensure that the community receives its rightful share of benefits. He also expressed support for the investigation into the fire incident, stressing that Bukuma remains committed to fighting illegal bunkering and vandalism.
