The United Nations has called for over $910 million to assist 3.6 million people in need of life-saving aid across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states in north-east Nigeria in 2025. This call is part of the 2025 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) launched by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall.

Conflict, climate shocks, and economic instability are among the major drivers of the humanitarian crisis. Flooding, disease outbreaks, food insecurity, and malnutrition are exacerbating vulnerabilities. In total, 7.8 million people in the region require assistance, with 33 million nationwide facing food insecurity.

Federal Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, emphasized the importance of integrated humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding efforts for long-term solutions, while governors from the affected states reaffirmed their commitment to working with the UN.

The plan focuses on anticipatory actions, direct funding to local partners, and scaling up cash assistance to reduce transaction costs.

Urgent funding is needed to address the immediate needs, particularly in food and nutrition, to protect the most vulnerable, especially children facing alarming levels of malnutrition.
