The African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, Moussa Faki, has expressed disappointment over the United States’ decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO). The announcement, made by U.S. President Donald Trump on January 20, 2025, cited concerns over WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other health crises.
In a statement released on January 23, Faki emphasized the critical role the U.S. has played as a WHO member for over seven decades, contributing to global health policies and public health security. He highlighted the U.S.’s support in establishing Africa CDC, which collaborates with WHO to combat pandemics and public health emergencies.
“Today, more than ever, the world relies on WHO to safeguard global health security as a shared responsibility,” Faki stated, urging the U.S. to reconsider its decision and uphold its founding role in the global health body.
The Chairperson reiterated the importance of WHO’s mandate in ensuring global health security and called for collective efforts to address public health challenges.
