- Lagos Assembly Seeks Environmental Law Enforcement
- Curb Scavenger Activities in Lagos
- Protect Public Infrastructure in Lagos
The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to enforce the Environmental Management Protection Law (2017) to curb vandalism and scavenger activities threatening public infrastructure.
During the plenary in Ikeja on January 21, 2025, Speaker Mojisola Meranda expressed concern over increasing cases of theft and destruction of vital infrastructure, including manhole covers, pedestrian bridge railings, and streetlight cables. She warned that such acts could hinder Lagos’ development efforts.
The Assembly urged the governor to direct law enforcement agencies to apprehend offenders and ensure they face strict penalties. Meranda also proposed using materials like glass-reinforced plastic for manhole covers, as these have minimal resale value in the scrap market.
The speaker emphasized the importance of public awareness campaigns to educate residents about the dangers of infrastructure theft and encourage reporting of suspicious activities. She further suggested community vigilance and whistleblower mechanisms to safeguard public assets.
The House reiterated its commitment to protecting infrastructure essential for safety, traffic management, and flood prevention, urging swift government action to replace stolen or damaged items.
By enforcing existing laws and engaging communities, Lagos can secure its investments and enhance residents’ quality of life.
