The Federal Government has unveiled the Eco-Schools initiative, aimed at equipping young Nigerians with knowledge and skills for sustainable living. The programme, launched by the Department of Climate Change (DCC) under the Federal Ministry of Environment, kicked off during a two-day climate change workshop in Abuja on January 16, 2025.

The initiative provides a handbook to guide students and foster knowledge sharing. Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe, DCC Director, emphasized the importance of empowering the next generation to address climate challenges and drive innovative solutions. Represented by Dr. Aliyu Musa Yanure, she stated, “We will empower students to become champions in their communities, driving impactful initiatives.”

The Secretary for Health and Environment for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, highlighted the inclusion of tree planting in the FCT’s development plan as part of the campaign. He revealed that 40 secondary schools in the FCT have already enlisted “green champions” to lead sustainability efforts, with plans to expand further.

Supported by the European Union, UNICEF, Save the Children International, and the FCT secretariat, the initiative aims to reach all area councils within the FCT, including Kwali, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Bwari, and Abaji.

During the workshop, students participated in interactive sessions, explored the handbook, and engaged in activities like the Play, Learn, and Act Now (PLAN) game. The programme underscores the government’s commitment to integrating environmental education into the school system and fostering climate literacy among Nigerian youth.
