- Civil groups demand justice for Odey Oyama.
- Release detained environmental activist now, CSOs urge.
- Nigerian Police accused of stifling dissenting voices.
Civil society organizations (CSOs), led by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), have urged the Nigeria Police to release environmental activist Odey Oyama and six others. Arrested on January 14, 2025, in Okuni, Cross River State, Oyama and his associates were detained without formal charges for over 24 hours.
Oyama, director of the Rainforest Resource and Development Centre (RRDC), is a prominent advocate against deforestation in the Effi Rainforest. His campaigns target illegal logging activities reportedly involving Chinese nationals and local collaborators. The CSOs argue that Oyama’s peaceful protests protect biodiversity and combat environmental degradation.
The groups condemned the Police for their alleged complicity in silencing dissent. “This arrest reflects growing intolerance towards legitimate civil society activities,” the statement read. They demanded immediate action to halt illegal logging and support activists protecting Cross River’s ecological heritage.
In 2024, Oyama raised alarms about deforestation and exploitation of the rainforest, calling it a vital resource under threat. The CSOs now call on government authorities to protect the forest and uphold environmental laws.
Oyama’s detention highlights concerns over shrinking civic spaces in Nigeria, where activists and journalists face increasing repression. His supporters demand his unconditional release, labeling his arrest a blow to efforts preserving Cross River’s rich biodiversity.
