UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced that the United Nations is assisting nearly 100 developing countries with their climate action plans in preparation for the COP30 climate conference, scheduled for November 2025 in Brazil.

Speaking at the General Assembly in New York, Guterres stressed the urgency of keeping the global warming limit of 1.5°C within reach. He highlighted the devastating effects of climate change, such as extreme weather events, but also pointed out the significant opportunity to reverse this damage. Global investments in clean energy now exceed investments in fossil fuels, showcasing the world’s commitment to tackling the climate crisis.

Guterres further acknowledged the progress made in various socio-economic areas, such as achieving gender parity in education and declining child mortality rates. However, he warned that global challenges like war, inequality, and climate change remain, calling for collective action through multilateral solutions.

In his address, Guterres emphasized the need for a balanced approach to technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), which he believes offers tremendous opportunities for development. He advocated for international cooperation to ensure that AI supports sustainable growth and respects human rights.

While the UN faces significant global challenges, Guterres ended on a hopeful note, stressing that through collective action and unwavering commitment, the world can overcome these obstacles and move toward a brighter future.
