The International Climate Change Development Initiative (ICCDI) has launched a project to address plastic pollution and open defecation in Nigeria. In partnership with the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), the initiative aims to build toilets using plastic bottles in six Nigerian states: Kano, Adamawa, Osun, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, and Niger.
During the project launch in Lagos on January 16, 2025, ICCDI Executive Director Olumide Idowu emphasized the dual challenge of plastic pollution and inadequate sanitation. The initiative will involve women and youth, providing them with training on constructing and maintaining bottle toilets using recycled materials. This approach not only reduces plastic waste but also empowers communities, especially women and youth, in climate action and environmental stewardship.
The project’s objectives include improving sanitation, particularly for women and girls, by providing safe, functional toilets and reducing the environmental impact of plastic waste. Awareness campaigns will be conducted by women and youth to educate local populations about proper sanitation practices and the benefits of recycling plastic waste.
Idowu also highlighted the potential for participants to turn these skills into small businesses, fostering a circular economy while promoting public health. The project is set to culminate on World Toilet Day, November 19, 2025, with the commissioning of the bottle toilets across the six states.
