The National Assembly has called for increased funding to Nigeria’s agricultural sector, emphasizing the importance of gradual budgetary allocation hikes to address food security challenges. During a budget defense by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Saliu Mustapha highlighted the need for sustainable investment in agriculture to meet future demands.
In 2025, the agricultural sector will receive 4.2% of the national budget, a significant improvement but still below the 10% commitment made in the Maputo Declaration. Senator Mustapha praised this progress but urged further efforts to ensure long-term agricultural development.
Senator Adamu Aleiro, a committee member, expressed concern over the reduction in the agricultural budget, emphasizing the sector’s importance in feeding Nigeria’s growing population. He called for an upward review of the allocation to meet the nation’s food security needs.
The Minister of Agriculture, Senator Abubakar Kyari, defended the Ministry’s budget, outlining plans to drive economic growth, job creation, and poverty alleviation through innovative agricultural policies. These initiatives focus on enhancing food security, mechanization, and rural development.
The National Assembly’s commitment to prioritizing agriculture will play a crucial role in ensuring that Nigeria’s agricultural sector becomes a sustainable driver of economic growth and food security in the years ahead.
