The Enugu State Government has issued an alert following an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as Bird Flu, reported in Kano State. The disease has affected various bird species, including layers, ducks, guinea fowl, and turkeys, raising concerns about its potential spread.

Patrick Ubru, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, stressed the risk of the outbreak spreading to neighboring states and beyond if preventive measures are not implemented. To mitigate this, the state has intensified efforts to safeguard the poultry industry and public health.

The Ministry of Agriculture has mobilized veterinary personnel to enhance the enforcement of preventive measures and educate poultry farmers, traders, and the general public on the risks of HPAI. Surveillance teams have also been deployed to monitor poultry farms and markets closely for signs of the virus.

The public is urged to report any unusual bird deaths or symptoms related to HPAI to the appropriate veterinary contacts. Strict biosecurity measures are essential to prevent the spread of the disease. The Enugu State Government emphasizes the importance of cooperation from all stakeholders in ensuring the safety of both human and animal health.
