$2 Billion Renewable Energy Grants Under Investigation
BY SHEKWOPEYELO
The House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy is set to investigate the usage of $2 billion in renewable energy grants allocated to Nigeria. Committee Chairman Rep. Victor Afam (LP-Anambra) announced that public hearings will occur on November 5 and 6, focusing on the period from 2015 to 2024.
Afam raised concerns about the lack of substantial impact from these investments on the country’s energy security challenges. The investigation will examine the roles of various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) involved in the procurement and management of these grants.
He highlighted the alarming persistence of dysfunction in electricity generation and supply, which contradicts the objectives behind government funding in renewable energy. The goal of this probe is to ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of public resources and to promote integrity in procurement processes.
Afam invited stakeholders to attend the public hearings and expressed gratitude to the European Union and other donor agencies for their contributions and cooperation with the committee.
