Colorado Drug Concerns: Hallucinations and Seizures

The drug known as “Colorado” has sparked significant health concerns in Nigeria. This term refers to a group of potent synthetic cannabinoids linked to serious health issues. Reports indicate that these substances can cause hallucinations, seizures, mental health disorders, and even fatalities. In 2023, the slang “On Colos” became popular in Nigeria, describing someone under the influence of this drug.
Colorado is designed to mimic the effects of cannabis, which remains illegal in Nigeria. Synthetic cannabinoids are also prevalent in the U.S., often marketed as herbal blends or incense. They are sold in head shops and gas stations under various names, including K2, Spice, Paradise, Black Magic, Skunk, and Scooby Snax. The adverse effects of synthetic cannabinoids can be severe, leading to nausea, vomiting, anxiety, strokes, and organ failure, often worse than those caused by cannabis.
In the U.S., it is illegal to use, possess, or sell synthetic marijuana. Additionally, over 40 substances found in Colorado are also prohibited under federal law.
