Bayelsa Environmental Pollution: Reps Target Oando and Aiteo

The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into the alleged environmental pollution caused by Oando and Aiteo Exploration and Production in Bayelsa State. This inquiry, organized by a joint committee on Environment and Petroleum Resources, aims to address significant environmental degradation in the host communities of Nembe, Brass, and Southern Ijaw.

During a recent session in Abuja, Speaker Tajudeen Abass emphasized that the investigation is a crucial fact-finding mission. He stated that the oil companies’ operations have led to various forms of environmental damage, including oil spills, water contamination, and noise pollution. These issues have adversely affected the local ecosystem and disrupted the livelihoods of the residents.

Abass highlighted the necessity for accountability from oil corporations, declaring, “We cannot stand idly by while the environment suffers due to negligence or greed.” He urged oil majors to ensure their activities align with global environmental standards.

Committee Chairman Pondi Gbabojor mentioned that the panel would consult environmental experts and relevant agencies to gain a comprehensive understanding of the pollution’s impact. This investigation highlights the ongoing struggles faced by communities in the Niger Delta region, where oil extraction has historically caused significant health and environmental issues.

As the House of Representatives seeks to uncover the extent of the damage and hold responsible parties accountable, it underscores the critical need for responsible environmental practices in the oil industry.
