Global Index Ranks Conservation in 180 Countries
Nature Conservation Index: Global Biodiversity Insights
New Tool Assesses Global Conservation Efforts
BY SHEKWOPEYELO
A new global tool, the Nature Conservation Index (NCI), has been launched to assess conservation efforts in 180 countries. Developed by BioDB.com in collaboration with the Goldman Sonnenfeldt School of Sustainability and Climate Change, the NCI uses 25 key indicators to evaluate protected areas, species at risk, and conservation policies. The goal is to provide valuable insights into how well countries balance environmental protection with development.
The NCI is structured around four pillars: land management, threats to biodiversity, capacity and governance, and future trends. These pillars highlight the challenges countries face in protecting biodiversity while managing development pressures. The tool evaluates protected areas, examines species at risk, and provides a forward-looking assessment of countries’ abilities to tackle future conservation challenges.
Key regions such as Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia face significant biodiversity threats. Deforestation, habitat loss, and illegal wildlife trade are among the major issues. Despite efforts, these regions continue to see declining species populations and ecosystem degradation.
The Nature Conservation Index emphasizes the importance of aligning conservation efforts with global sustainability goals. It calls for international collaboration and strategic planning to address the mounting biodiversity crisis.
This report serves as a critical reminder of the urgent need for action to protect the planet’s rich biodiversity.
