The Nigerian Federal Government has urged downstream states of the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon to activate flood control measures to mitigate potential loss of lives and property. Chief Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, issued the warning at a news conference in Abuja on September 18, 2024, addressing recent flood risks and seismic activities in the country.

The opening of the Lagdo Dam has led to significant overflow, affecting about 18,737 hectares of land by mid-September. Minister Nnaji advised states including Kogi, Edo, Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa to take immediate action against flood risks.

Nnaji also reported recent earth tremors in Mpape, FCT, caused by seismic activity along fault lines. He reassured residents to remain calm as the government monitors the situation closely and implements necessary measures. The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) is working to enhance disaster response through improved monitoring systems.
