The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed that flooding and windstorms have claimed 49 lives and impacted 226 communities across 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kano State from January 2024 to date.

Alhaji Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, SEMA’s Executive Secretary, shared this update on September 11, 2024, while addressing the media in Kano. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier warned of high flood risks in 14 LGAs, a prediction that has tragically come to pass.

The floods have destroyed 6,583 houses and displaced 1,414 people, while 139 individuals have sustained injuries. The disaster also devastated 8,289 farmlands, equivalent to 36,265 hectares, affecting 38,814 people overall.

SEMA has been actively visiting affected areas to offer support and distribute relief materials. Workshops have been organized in collaboration with stakeholders to address environmental hazards, particularly flooding.

Alhaji Abdullahi-Kubarachi commended Governor Abba Yusuf for providing essential logistics and support to alleviate the victims’ suffering. He also urged residents to avoid building on waterways and to regularly clear drainage systems to prevent future floods. Wealthy individuals were called upon to assist in supporting the flood victims.

SEMA remains committed to protecting lives and property in Kano State, with ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of environmental hazards.
