In the past two weeks, severe flooding in Gashua, the headquarters of Bade Local Government Area in Yobe State, has resulted in at least 20 deaths and rendered approximately 3,000 people homeless. The flooding caused numerous house collapses due to heavy rainfall.

Babagana Ibrahim, the Executive Chairman of the Local Government Area, confirmed the fatalities and reported that many residents are now seeking shelter in three designated camps. The local government is supplying immediate necessities such as food, medical care, hygiene kits, and clean drinking water to prevent disease outbreaks among the displaced.

Ibrahim has called for additional support from the federal government and donor agencies, emphasizing the urgent need for relief materials. He stated, “The number of displaced persons has risen to around 3,000. We need further assistance from the Federal Government and donor agencies to provide relief to those affected.”

He also noted that the continuous rainfall has exacerbated the situation, leading to further collapses, including four deaths reported today alone. In response to the ongoing danger, the Council Chairman has instructed residents in mud houses to evacuate to avoid additional casualties.

Additionally, the two federal roads leading to Gashua have been damaged and are currently impassable, complicating efforts by emergency and humanitarian workers to assist the affected community.
