The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq-Adekunle Salako
, has emphasized that addressing the challenges of climate change and energy transition requires innovative solutions coupled with a strong commitment to ethical governance.

Speaking at the first International Anti-Corruption and Climate Change Conference, Dr. Salako, represented by Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe, Director of the Department of Climate Change, stressed that transparency and accountability are fundamental to achieving sustainable development.

The conference, organized by the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) Resource Centre, focused on national stakeholder engagement for accountability in climate change, energy transition, and oil extraction licensing.

Dr. Salako described climate change as a critical global issue, posing significant threats to security, health, and biodiversity. He highlighted the importance of a robust transparency framework to ensure effective climate action in Nigeria, mentioning the country’s commitment to the enhanced transparency framework under the Paris Agreement. Nigeria is set to submit its first Biennial Transparency Report by December 31, 2024.

Mallam Issa-Onilu, Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), also underscored the urgency of climate change, calling for collective efforts across all sectors to ensure responsible energy practices. He emphasized that innovation and adherence to best practices are crucial for achieving a sustainable energy future.

Olarewaju Suraju, Chairman of HEDA Resources Centre, pointed out the ongoing abuse of Nigeria’s natural resources by international operators, local communities, and officials. He stressed the need for a shift in focus towards sustainable development and equitable resource management.

This conference marks a significant step towards fostering accountability and transparency in addressing climate change and energy transition in Nigeria, ensuring that the country’s rich natural resources are harnessed for the benefit of the people and the environment.
