Lagos State has launched a rigorous crackdown on open defecation, leading to the arrest of more than 40 individuals over the past three months. This initiative is part of the state government’s broader efforts to address public hygiene issues, particularly in areas bordering Ogun State.
The State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, supported by the State Environmental Sanitation Corps, has been actively patrolling regions with insufficient public toilet facilities. These efforts have resulted in numerous arrests for violations of Lagos State’s environmental laws.
Recent enforcement actions, spearheaded by Gaji Omobolaji, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, targeted the Berger area, a known hotspot for open defecation. During a recent operation, 14 individuals were apprehended for public defecation and urination.
Omobolaji stressed that these enforcement measures are crucial for preventing the spread of diseases such as cholera and diarrhea. The enforcement teams will continue working in shifts to ensure compliance and tackle the issue effectively.
Lagos and Ogun state governments had earlier announced plans to combat open defecation, focusing on border communities. In April, Dr. Omobolaji Gaji reiterated the state’s commitment to promoting proper sanitation and legal repercussions for offenders.
Despite over 10 toilet facilities in the Berger area, including those at a Total filling station and Berger bus stop garage, there is still a shortage relative to the high number of travelers. The state government plans to build additional toilets with water treatment plants to address this deficiency and support environmental sustainability.
