The Federal Government has successfully completed phase one of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities project at 92 Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs). Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman announced the delivery of these facilities during a ceremony in Abuja, emphasizing the importance of creating a conducive learning environment.

Prof. Mamman highlighted the initiative as a pivotal step in transforming educational settings across the country. “The introduction of these WASH facilities marks the beginning of a transformative journey for our schools, fostering an environment where learners can thrive,” he stated. This project is part of the government’s broader vision to enhance basic and secondary education.

Mrs. Amina Haruna, National Project Coordinator for the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), reported positive outcomes from the initiative. She noted that 40% of the initial phase has been completed, with the remaining 60% set to bring significant infrastructural improvements, including classrooms, laboratories, multipurpose halls, kitchens, ICT centers, and essential learning materials.

Haruna also emphasized that the initiative aims to rebrand the FUCs, improve enrollment and retention rates, and enrich the overall learning experience. While AGILE oversees the project at 92 colleges, the World Bank supports other Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) through the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) project.
