Severe flooding in northern Sudan has claimed dozens of lives and left thousands homeless as heavy rains continue to batter the region. The flooding has exacerbated an already dire situation in Sudan, a country struggling with a major displacement crisis due to ongoing conflict.
According to Qureshi Hussein, a spokesperson for the Sudanese Civil Defence, 31 people have lost their lives in the northern regions of the country due to the floods. The impact has been devastating, with entire communities and villages submerged, forcing residents to flee their homes.
Yassin Abdul Wahab, one of the flood victims, shared his ordeal, revealing that his home was destroyed. “People are sleeping in the streets, and the situation is very bad,” Wahab said. “We are currently working on building a shelter for the family using materials from the collapsed house,” he added.
The August floods have affected more than 317,000 people across Sudan, with 118,000 displaced, intensifying one of the world’s largest displacement crises as the country continues to grapple with ongoing conflict.
As of Tuesday, it will be 500 days since Sudan descended into conflict following the outbreak of fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
